“Each participant could receive ₦5 million” — Man proposes replacing NYSC with military service

A man has suggested that a three-year National Military Service program for recent graduates take the place of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program, with participants receiving ₦5 million upon completion of their service.

The man claimed in an online proposal that the program could foster discipline, practical skills development, and a greater sense of national responsibility among young Nigerians.

As part of the proposed program, he proposed that graduates receive organized military training and service, including deployment to operational areas.

The man suggested that as an alternative to the current NYSC program, the government should think about implementing the National Military Service (NNMS).

“The Government should consider replacing NYSC with National Military Service (NNMS) for fresh graduates,” he wrote.

He suggested a three-year commitment in which participants would serve in the military and possibly be sent to locations where operations are occurring.

A ₦5 million completion benefit is also included in the proposal for those who successfully complete their service.

He claimed that although the arrangement would require young graduates to make a significant commitment, there might be advantages beyond the monetary gain.

He wrote that the initiative could help build “discipline, national service, skills and a stronger sense of responsibility among young Nigerians.”

With a stronger focus on military training, national security, and organized service, the proposal offers an alternative vision for Nigeria’s graduate service system.

The proposal does not, however, specify whether the government is thinking about implementing such a program. It also raises concerns about participant safety, funding, training, deployment, and recruitment.

The proposed three-year commitment would be a substantial departure from the current NYSC arrangement.
