A bus carrying young athletes to a competition in Hungary crashed after veering into the opposite lane and colliding with a tree, leaving the driver dead and nearly two dozen passengers injured.

According to police, the accident occurred at about 5:20 a.m. on Saturday, May 30, in the town of Hird, located in southwestern Hungary. Authorities said the cause of the crash has not yet been determined.

The bus was transporting competitors from the aerobics division of the Pécs Sports School to Budapest for the second round of the Hungarian Cup when it reportedly left the roadway and crashed.

There were 28 people on board, including 19 young athletes, three coaches, six parents, and the driver.

Police said 23 of the 28 occupants sustained injuries in the crash. All passengers were transported to hospitals for treatment.

According to the sports school, one athlete suffered a fractured femur along with broken fingers, concussions, bruises, and abrasions. Two coaches were also reported to have sustained more serious injuries and remain under medical observation.

Reacting to the tragedy, Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok described the accident as heartbreaking and extended his condolences to the family of the deceased while wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the crash.
