Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has ruled that former President Goodluck Jonathan is eligible to contest in the 2027 general elections.

The ruling was delivered in a suit filed by Abuja-based lawyer Jideobi Johnmary, who sought to prevent Jonathan from participating in any future presidential election on the grounds that he had already taken the presidential oath of office twice.

Justice Lifu dismissed the suit, describing it as an abuse of court process and a waste of judicial time. According to the judge, both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal had previously addressed and resolved the issue surrounding Jonathan’s eligibility.

The court also awarded costs of ₦20 million against the plaintiff in favour of Jonathan, alongside an additional ₦1 million awarded in favour of the Attorney-General of the Federation.

“I am bound by the above decision of the Court of Appeal and this court, I have no more to add”, Lifu said
