Chelsea has a huge job as they aim to stage a spectacular comeback in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 match against Paris Saint-Germain after losing 5-2 in Paris.
The London team is trailing by three goals after a torrid night at the Parc des Princes, requiring a spectacular recovery to keep their European campaign alive.
It has historically been incredibly difficult to overcome a three-goal disadvantage at this level of the Champions League. Chelsea has only twice lost the first leg of a European knockout tie by three or more goals.
The previous incident occurred during the 2020 Round of 16 versus Bayern Munich.2020: Round of 16 against Bayern Munich. The Blues were defeated 3-0 at Stamford Bridge before losing the second leg 4-1 in Germany.
Chelsea will want to escape a similar fate this time around, but the margin they must overcome makes advancement difficult.
The team will be inspired by their 3-0 triumph over PSG in the team World Cup final last summer, but an even bigger win margin is now necessary to overcome the deficit. PSG’s history implies that they are well positioned to reach the quarterfinals.
On 14 previous occasions, the French champions led a European tie by three goals or more after the first leg. In 12 of those ties, PSG advanced to the next round.
The only major collapse occurred in the memorable 2017 Champions League Round of 16 match against Barcelona.
PSG were upset 6-1 at Camp Nou in a remarkable comeback known as the “Remontada” after winning the first leg 4-0 in Paris.
Chelsea will now need a similarly remarkable turnaround to keep their Champions League chances alive and prevent PSG from progressing to the latter stages of Europe’s premier club competition.
