Carrick defends Manchester United celebration of recent form

Manchester United’s head coach, Michael Carrick, has disputed suggestions that triumphs should be downplayed, claiming that it would be “boring and pointless” not to celebrate success as his team continues its great Premier League run.

United have won four straight games since Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim last month, propelling the club to fourth place.

With a trip to West Ham United on Wednesday, another win will boost their chances of qualifying for the Champions League.

Speaking prior of the game, Carrick established a mix between enjoyment and realism, emphasising the importance of acknowledging triumphs without losing focus.

“You’ve got to enjoy the buzz of winning, that’s what we’re in it for,” Carrick said. “You can’t just be flat-lined all the time. You have to feel the waves of emotion.

“It would all be a little bit boring and pointless if you didn’t, because winning games is what we all strive for.”

While Carrick has often warned against complacency, he has admitted that high-level accomplishments require respect. He pointed out that United’s recent success is based on preparation rather than momentum.

“The big challenge is knowing the hard work and preparation that has got you there,” he added. “Winning a game of football at this level is tough, so you never assume the next one’s just going to be alright.”

Carrick’s views contrast with the style of his former boss, Sir Alex Ferguson, who was known for sending tough instructions even after victories to maintain high standards. However, Carrick claimed that his own managerial style allowed for flexibility.

“There is a time and a place for everything,” he said, indicating that criticism and celebration can coexist depending on context.

Carrick also downplayed a social media trend involving fan Frank Ilett, who promised not to cut his hair unless United won five straight games.

The competition, which began in October 2024 under Erik ten Hag, has sparked both internet attention and controversy, including an alleged physical altercation with Ilett at Old Trafford.

“My kids have made me aware of it,” Carrick said. “I can understand what’s going on with it and it does make me smile, but it certainly won’t go into the team talk from a professional level.”
