The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted ₦1 billion bail to former Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, SAN, and his son, Abdulaziz.
Hajia Bashir Asabe, Malami’s wife and a defendant in the case, was given ₦500 million bail. Justice Emeka Nwite issued the ruling, imposing tight bail restrictions on all of the defendants.
Each defendant must produce two sureties, each of whom owns landed property in Asokoro, Maitama, or Gwarinpa in the Federal Capital Territory.
The titles to the properties must be filed to the court for verification. In addition, the accused must surrender their foreign passports.
The sureties are also required to provide two recent passport photographs and sign an affidavit of means.
The court further warned that the accused must not leave the country without authorisation and will remain in detention until all bail terms are properly met.
The trial has been adjourned until February 17 for further proceedings. The EFCC has linked about ₦200 billion in assets to Malami’s term from 2015 to 2023, including substantial financial transactions.
With release granted under tight restrictions, the Malami family is likely to properly comply ahead of the next court session, as public attention remains firmly focused on the family.
