Boniface promises support for injured Nigerian player after ACL surgery

Victor Boniface, a striker for Bayer Leverkusen, has promised to help a Nigerian football player who needs help finishing his recovery after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery.

After the player, named as Grace Boy, contacted the Super Eagles forward on social media to ask for financial assistance for physiotherapy and post-surgery treatment, the forward publicly reacted.

Grace Boy disclosed that although his operation was performed in Nigeria, insufficient post-operative monitoring has jeopardised his recuperation and professional prospects.

He made a direct appeal to Boniface in his message, expressing concerns that inadequate rehabilitation might prevent him from playing competitive football again.

“I am calling on your attention sir to seek for your kind support in this difficult time of my career,” he wrote.

“Having to undergo an ACL surgery in Nigeria without a proper follow-up care has been my biggest fear. Please, I am calling on your attention to seek for your support to continue my physiotherapy and rehab session, so I can be able to return back to playing football again.”

As the Leverkusen striker continues to heal from his own ailment, the injured player also wished Boniface well.

In response, Boniface expressed empathy and acknowledged the difficulties Nigerian youth football players endure, especially those who lack access to organised medical and welfare systems.

“E no easy for young Nigeria player I swear,” Boniface replied. “I know how many player I have help without people knowing. We go try help you.”

The 24-year-old’s statement received a lot of attention, bringing player welfare and injury management in domestic football to light.

ACL injuries are among the most dangerous in sport, frequently necessitating months of specialised treatment and organised rehabilitation.

Access to high-quality sports medicine and physiotherapy is still restricted in Nigeria, particularly for athletes who are not elite.
