The Bishop of the Anglican Missionary Diocese of Oyo South, Olufemi Familoni, has urged the Federal Government to equip local vigilante groups with modern weapons to help address the country’s growing security challenges.

The cleric made the appeal on Sunday shortly after an ordination service for deacons, canons, archdeacons and a sub-dean within the diocese.

Commenting on the increasing cases of baπditry, k!dnapping and k!llings across the country, Bishop Familoni said local security outfits such as Amotekun have demonstrated their capacity to assist in fighting crime and should receive greater support, training and equipment.

According to him, available reports indicate that Amotekun has contributed to reducing incidents of baπditry in parts of South-West Nigeria. He added that local vigilante groups should be empowered to confront criminals operating in forests and other remote locations.

“The k!llings in Nigeria are becoming unbearable. We cannot continue like this as a nation. Our military appears overstretched, and it is time to encourage local security groups to complement the efforts of conventional security agencies,” he said.

The bishop, however, commended the efforts of the police and military, noting that security personnel have displayed courage in several operations. He called on the government to provide them with additional resources and support to strengthen the fight against insecurity.

Familoni also expressed optimism that the government is making efforts to secure the release of the k!dnapped students and teachers from Oyo State.

“We are praying and hoping for the safe rescue of our children and teachers. The government must not relent in its efforts. There must be the political will needed to end this menace,” he said.

He further cautioned against politicising security matters, stressing that the protection of human lives should remain a priority above political interests.

“Human lives are too precious to be reduced to politics. Security agencies must be empowered and fully supported to combat this challenge,” he added.
