Aisha Yesufu has explained why she turned down a chance to run for the House of Representatives in the 2027 general elections on the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) platform.
The human rights advocate stated that she was unwilling to compromise her morals or integrity in order to take political positions.
In an interview with Symfoni TV, Yesufu clarified that she was unwilling to accept the terms of some of the political proposals that were made to her.
Yesufu says she doesn’t think pursuing political power should be done at all costs.
She stated she would prefer remain outside government than accept conditions that could force her to sacrifice her ideals.
“I did not accept the House of Representatives ticket that was given to me because there were other people who were doing it on the issue of principle. There were many issues where many people brought ‘I will make you this but you have to do A, B, C, D. It’s pretty obvious.
“We are not going to sell Nigeria. I don’t have to be president by force. We won’t make any promises that we will not fulfill,” she said.
Yesufu’s remarks follow the revelation by NDC national leader Seriake Dickson that she had been offered the House of Representatives ticket by both him and the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Yesufu declined the ticket despite the offer, claiming her dedication to morality and aversion to make unfulfilled commitments.
