Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has conceded that he may not earn the African Democratic Congress’ (ADC) presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.
Obi’s comments come amid mounting uncertainty about his political future and the hurdles he may face within the ADC, a smaller opposition party than his former platform, the Labour Party.
In a video message to his supporters, Obi said:
“Someone asked me how I know for sure that the ADC will give me the presidential ticket. I cannot be certain. What matters is that we are committed to a cause. I keep wondering how we ended up in this situation and what might happen if we decide to stop working on this project.”
He emphasised that he is still committed to his aims and has not allowed reported threats dissuade him.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate also complimented his followers for their fortitude, understanding the difficulties of working in opposition politics in Nigeria.
“I thank you for your sacrifice. It’s not easy to be in the opposition in Nigeria, and I’m thankful to those who keep supporting even when there’s no clear reward,” he said.
Obi officially joined the ADC on December 31, 2025, in a ceremony conducted at the Nike Lake Resort in Enugu, putting an end to months of uncertainty regarding his political future.
He claimed that his decision to leave the Labour Party occurred when he was informed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would not recognise the party’s leadership as long as he remained there, essentially preventing him from running in the next election on that platform.
