A 12-year-old boy, Damilola Khalid Afolabi, has d!ed after dr0wning in Mahogany Lake in Calgary, shortly after going into the water on Sunday, May 3, 2026.
According to reports, the child had been playing basketball before he suddenly jumped into the lake and failed to resurface. Emergency services were called around 7:20 p.m. after witnesses reported that a child had entered the water from a dock and disappeared.
Rescue teams from the Calgary Fire Department arrived to difficult conditions, including poor visibility and cold water, which slowed the search operation. After nearly 45 minutes, responders located the boy more than six metres underwater and brought him out for emergency care.
CFD public information officer Alex Kwan explained the recovery effort, saying:
“Our rescuers were able to pull the child out of the water from a depth of about 6 meters, into a waiting ambulance,”
He added that the boy was transported in critical, life-thr£atening condition.
The boy’s father, Jubreel Babatunde Afolabi, was deeply emotional during the funeral held on May 6.
