Jojo of Lele, a social media influencer, has decried the rising expense of rubbish disposal ahead of the next monthly cleaning operation in Lagos, which is being coordinated by members of the Ratels community, lead by activist VeryDarkMan.

According to Jojo, Ratels members meet on the last Saturday of each month to clean their environment and typically hire a waste disposal truck to transport the refuse collected during the exercise.

She revealed that the cost of hiring the vehicle has risen dramatically over time, shocking the group with the latest figure sought.

“Una know say we dey clean road every end of the month Saturday, and we use to rent dustbin van to come and park the dirt. Before we pay ₦250k, before we knew it they moved it to ₦300k, the last time was ₦450k. Now we’re planning for our next cleaning, and they are now telling us ₦800k. Like una no fear?” she lamented.

Jojo questioned the rationale behind the most recent hike, especially since Ratels collects the rubbish being evacuated on public highways as part of their community cleanup effort.

She also voiced her dissatisfaction with the service’s condition, stating that the truck driver can decline to return after the vehicle is full.

“₦800k to come and pack dirt that is not ours, and the worst part is that they will tell you that if their truck is full, they won’t come back,” she added.

Her protest has brought attention to the rising expense of disposing of rubbish and the financial strain it puts on neighborhood-based environmental cleanup initiatives.

The most recent waste evacuation cost is now a serious concern for the organisers of the Ratels members’ next cleaning exercise, which is scheduled on the final Saturday of each month.
