Zamfara Assembly Suspends Lawmakers for Working With Bandits

Two members of the Zamfara state House of Assembly have been suspended for alleged connections to bandits.

Yusuf Muhammad, Anka, who represents the Anka Constituency, and Ibrahim T. Tukur Bakura, who represents the Bakura Constituency, have been suspended for three months.

According to Mustapha Jafaru Kaura, the Assembly’s Director General of Press Affairs and Public Relations, the MPs will not return to the chamber until the inquiry into the allegations against them is completed.

“They will also testify before the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges, as well as security agencies mandated by law to probe them.”

“These are among the resolutions agreed just now at the House plenary presided over by the speaker of the House, Rt Hon Nasiru Mu’azu Magarya, on subjects of urgent public importance,” Kaura stated.

Member from Maru North, Hon Yusuf Alhassan Kanoma, led the debate quickly after each and every member swore an oath, drawing the attention of his colleagues to the “hot topic” in the House.

He stated that the house should not be complacent in the face of the severe allegations made against the two members.

Kanoma further claimed that Yusuf Muhammad Anka and Ibrahim T Tukur Bakura were involved in the kidnapping of the speaker’s father, late Alhaji Mu’azu Abubakar Magarya.

Kanoma further alleged that during the kidnap saga of the father of speaker late Alhaji Mu’azu Abubakar Magarya in particular Yusuf Muhammad Anka and Ibrahim T Tukur Bakura were said to have been jubilating over the issue.

He further claimed that the two politicians were responsible for the death of Hon Muhammad G. Ahmad (Walin Jangeru), a former member of the state House of Assembly who represented the Shinkafi seat.

He alleged that they disclosed information via which the dead was tracked by bandits.

He requested that security agencies trace all of their phone lines and listen in on all of their discussions.
