An abroad-based Nigerian guy has generated outrage online after stating that in Texas, someone can purportedly marry without even recognising it.
Sharing his story, he described how his friend’s fiancée allegedly filed for divorce despite the fact that they never had a formal wedding.
“In Texas, you can enter into marriage without being aware. You’re walking freely, thinking you’re a single man, meanwhile you’re a married man,” he said.
According to him, the lady’s claim was based on the fact that they had lived together, shared an address, and were publicly recognised as a couple.
He said that his friend’s main ‘offence’ was inviting his fiancée to move into his home to save money, unaware that it could subsequently be perceived differently.
“My homeboy’s girlfriend just filed for a divorce, meanwhile they were never married. She’s seeking half of his assets. For the past few months, they were living together, sharing the same mailing address, and he was parading her as his wife,” he added.
The man went on to urge others to be cautious of cohabitation, particularly in areas where common-law marriage is permitted.
He said that instances like this could be one of the reasons why some men seem to avoid commitment conversations.
The topic has sparked discussions online, with many Nigerians questioning relationships, cohabitation, and legal ramifications abroad.
