Wike Said He Wanted to Support Me, But I Didn’t Agree to His Terms – Peter Obi

Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has spoken about his relationship with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and the changing political positions of prominent figures ahead of the 2027 general election.

In an interview on Advocacy for Good Governance on Friday, September 18, 2026, Obi was asked about Wike’s current support for President Bola Tinubu and their previous interactions. He said he had come across different accounts concerning Wike’s earlier stance toward him.

“Nyesom Wike said, ‘He wanted to support me, but I didn’t agree to his terms,’” Obi stated, quoting what he had heard about the FCT Minister’s position.

Obi noted that people have the right to change their political positions and that he did not know the exact reason why some individuals shifted from supporting him. He maintained that he would not rely on assumptions or speculation when discussing the motives of another person.

The former Anambra State governor dismissed suggestions that Wike’s appointment as FCT Minister was responsible for the change in stance. He emphasised that political relationships can evolve over time as individuals make their own decisions about who to support.

Obi concluded that he could only speak about what he had heard, while Wike remained the only person who could explain the actual reason for his political decision.
