“Who made the rules?” – Iyabo Ojo slams critics, backs actors dancing to promote their movies

The recent debates about actors and actresses dancing on social media to promote their films have prompted a response from Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo.

Top actors in the Nigerian film business have expressed differing positions on the matter, which has continued to polarise the industry.

Iyabo Ojo challenged the notion that there are set guidelines for film promotion on her Instagram feed.

No one owes anyone an explanation of their marketing strategy, she said. In the industry, jealousy frequently leads to unwarranted criticism, she said.

The actress urged her coworkers to prioritise outcomes over subjective viewpoints.

She suggested that they follow the tactics that are most effective for them and let others achieve their goals in their own unique ways.

Read what Iyabo Ojo wrote below:

“Who made the rules? Nobody you gotta answer to.

2026 ain’t for talkers — it’s for doers.

Do what works for YOU.

Let others win their way.

You win yours. Period.

When filmmaker Kunle Afolayan said at the film’s premiere that he would not be interested in making ₦1 billion or ₦2 billion at the box office if he could not personally make at least ₦10 million from it, the argument heated up.

He also took issue with performers who use dance to advertise their movies on social media.

Actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele responded to Kunle Afolayan’s remarks by emphasising that she was not accountable for anyone’s success or failure.

The entertainment industry is big enough for everyone to flourish, she said, urging him not to let jealously control him.

Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, a veteran actress, also participated in the conversation by declaring that she would not dance to promote her films.

She emphasised that a good movie should speak for itself and called such a promotional approach unprofessional.

She later posted a video of herself dancing while promoting her highest-grossing film, though, which caused a stir on social media.
