A Nigerian woman’s statement that her brothers would not wed any non-virgin women has caused a lot of backlash on the internet.
In a video that went popular on X (now Twitter), the woman disclosed that she had previously given advice to her cousin brothers, who are now of marriageable age, regarding the kind of women they ought to view as potential spouses.
By continuing to pay bride prices and marrying women who have what she called “high body counts,” she claims that males are promoting particular behaviours.

“I have told my cousin brothers, if she’s not a virgin, we will not pay bride price. We will follow you for the engagement, we will do the marriage process, but that bride price, we no go give shishi,.
She also blasted some young women’s lifestyles on TikTok and other social media sites, claiming that males support them by continuing to choose to wed them.
She asserted that young women would be forced to change their behaviour and ideals if males as a group refused to marry women whose past they disapproved of.
“The more you men continue to wife them and privatise them, they won’t see anything wrong with what they are doing,” she added.
Since then, her remarks have sparked much discussion on social media.
One user wrote, “Double standards everywhere. Everyone has preferences, sha.” Another added, “Marriage is more than someone’s past.”
