Students from Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital’s (NAUTH) tuition of Nursing in Nnewi protested on Monday morning in response to an unusual increase in tuition fees.
Fees have reportedly increased from ₦90,000 to ₦580,000 per academic session.
The students criticised the rise, calling it “outrageous” and unsustainable, particularly for those from low-income households.
Many noted that the spike lacks transparency and jeopardises aspiring nurses’ access to high-quality education.
In a memo received by NationGuard News on January 23, 2026, Prof. O. I. Ejiofor, CMAC and Chairman of the NAUTH Board of Nursing, claimed that the increase is part of the institution’s continued efforts to become a respected monotechnic.
The instruction applies to all levels, including HND, Basic Nursing, and Midwifery students, and requires prompt implementation of the higher prices.
While the administration cited institutional growth as the reason, students and parents expressed dissatisfaction with the sudden financial burden.
Critics of the hike believe that such substantial increases are part of a larger trend in Southeast universities, where higher education is becoming more commercialised.
Others have pointed out that prior fee increases of this magnitude have caused students to drop out.
Many people have urged the federal government to step in and provide cash or scholarship opportunities.
“Students need basic teaching aids to learn, and the school cannot risk producing poorly trained graduates,” one concerned observer said.
Others have pointed out that prior fee increases of this magnitude have caused students to drop out.
