Viral moment as Governor Makinde refuses to kiss his wife publicly at an event

Following his response to his wife Tamunominni Makinde’s public expression of affection at a recent event, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has generated a lot of discussion on social media.

On Wednesday, February 5, Oyo State celebrated its 50th anniversary with a dinner and award ceremony that the governor and his spouse attended.

Tamunominni, who was standing next to her husband while he sat, leant in to kiss him in a video that is currently doing the rounds on social media.

But the Governor seemed to rebuff the gesture, pulling away. While other important guests could be seen in the background, his wife seemed to try to defuse the awkward situation by laughing it off.

Since then, the video has elicited conflicting responses on the internet. Some people jumped to the governor’s defence, while others criticised his approach.

One social media user commented, “He’s probably a shy man.” Another wrote, “Omg, why? I’m sending her hugs. This is horrible.”

Discussions concerning public affection, respect between spouses, and the expectations placed on public figures—especially political leaders—in public settings have been triggered by the occurrence.
