According to a report by Anadolu Agency on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, US President Donald Trump has expressed confidence that the ongoing conflict with Iran will soon come to an end, saying Washington is moving quickly toward a resolution and insisting that Tehran is eager to negotiate.
Speaking at the White House on Tuesday, Trump said the war would be concluded “very quickly,” adding that Iranian authorities were exhausted by the prolonged fighting and wanted to reach an agreement.
“We’re going to end that war very quickly. They want to make a deal so badly, they’re tired of this,” Trump told reporters.
The US president further stated that his administration hoped to resolve the crisis peacefully while ensuring that Iran would never acquire nuclear weapons.
“I think we’re going to be finished with that very quickly, and they won’t have a nuclear weapon, and hopefully we’re going to get it done in a very nice manner,” he added.
Trump also used the occasion to praise the strength of the US military, claiming recent operations had significantly weakened Iran’s military infrastructure and combat capabilities.
According to him, American forces had effectively dismantled key components of Iran’s defence systems during the conflict.
“Our military is the greatest in the world,” Trump said. “We wiped out their navy. Their air force is gone. Their anti-aircraft is gone. All of their material that they use for warfare is gone.”
The president also appeared to reference heavy losses among Iran’s leadership during the war, though he stopped short of elaborating.
“I don’t want to say their leaders are gone, because it’s not very nice, but that happens to be true,” he said.
Trump reiterated Washington’s longstanding position that Iran must never be allowed to develop nuclear weapons, stressing that the United States would not tolerate any move by Tehran to pursue such capabilities.
“We won’t be able to put up with that, and we’re not going to put up with it,” he said.
The latest remarks come amid heightened tensions across the Middle East following the outbreak of war between Iran, the United States and Israel earlier this year.
The conflict escalated after joint US-Israeli strikes targeted Iranian military and nuclear facilities in February, prompting retaliatory attacks by Tehran against Israel and several US allies in the Gulf region.
Iran also moved to shut down the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, raising fears of major disruptions to global oil supplies and international trade routes.
Diplomatic efforts later produced a temporary ceasefire that took effect on April 8 following mediation by Pakistan. However, talks held in Islamabad failed to secure a permanent peace agreement between the parties.
Despite the breakdown in negotiations, Trump subsequently announced an indefinite extension of the truce, raising hopes that further diplomatic engagements could eventually bring the conflict to a lasting end.
