Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a controversial Islamic cleric, has condemned the US government for recent airstrikes in Nigeria and urged it to spend money on basic utilities and education for herders rather than on pricey weaponry.

Gumi emphasised that bombing won’t end insecurity and maintained that ignorance is still one of the key problems affecting herding groups.

The preacher made the comments in response to a widely shared video that purportedly showed a Fulani man discovering a barrel in an open field that appeared to be from a missile fired by the US military.

Gumi claimed that the man’s actions demonstrated a lack of awareness of the threat presented by unexploded military weaponry.

The cleric responded via a Facebook post, expressing worry that such instances would result in fatalities.

“Most herdsmen need deliverance from ignorance and themselves, not bombardment,” Gumi wrote.

The Fulani guy in the video, according to Gumi, lacked basic religious and safety knowledge.

“He doesn’t even understand the basic creed of Islam and the serious danger of unexploded bombs,” he added.

The cleric claimed that education, not violence, has always been his approach to the issue.

“That’s why I built a school for them,” he stated.

“Instead of dropping a $2m bomb that can build schools and amenities for them.”

President Donald Trump ordered the US military to conduct airstrikes in portions of Sokoto State, Nigeria, on Christmas Day.

The strikes apparently failed to reach their intended targets, which were suspected terrorist organisations from Lakurawa and ISIS.

The Nigerian government confirmed the occurrence and called the operation a coordinated mission.

It further stated that after security evaluations, President Bola Tinubu authorised the action.
