“Until we enforce consequences, kidnapping won’t stop” — Man calls for stricter punishment

A man has advocated for stronger punishment for crimes such as abduction in Nigeria, claiming that weak consequences and a lack of public accountability are driving increased criminal activity.

The words, made during a recent public discourse, raised questions about parenting, justice delivery, and the societal impact of crime.

The speaker attacked what he saw as weak disciplinary measures in some homes, saying that failing to instill consequences in youngsters could lead to future criminal activity.

He contended that both family upbringing and society enforcement of rules play important roles in developing responsible individuals.

When a child misbehaves and faces no real consequences, what the mother is doing is breeding a criminal that could grow up to destroy lives or become a disgrace to the family,” he said.

He also stated that Nigeria already has rules governing penalties for significant crimes, but questioned the lack of openness and enforcement, particularly in abduction instances.

He believes that making the repercussions more evident will deter others.

We have a constitution that governs this country, but we don’t see its full execution. Kidnapping carries serious punishment, yet we don’t hear what happens to those caught. Until consequences are enforced and seen, others will continue to see it as a profitable venture,” he added.

He also mentioned previous cases of kidnapping victims experiencing long-term trauma, adding that survivors rarely return to normal life, emphasising the gravity of the crime and the need for decisive action.
