Two teenagers dr0wn in Kaduna river as torrential rain triggers flooding

Two teenagers have dr0wned in a river at Askplaye community in Kaduna State following torrential rainfall that affected parts of the state.

The victims were identified as 19-year-old Suleiman Yakubu and 17-year-old Abubakar Mohammed.

The incident was confirmed by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), North-West Operations Office, Kaduna.

According to the agency, the bodies of the two victims had yet to be recovered as of the time of the report.

In a statement posted on its official Facebook page, NEMA said its North-West Operations Office, in collaboration with the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA) and other stakeholders, had continued to assess the flood situation following torrential rainfall that lasted for approximately four consecutive days, from Thursday to Monday, across parts of Kaduna metropolis.

The agency said its Head of Operations, Hajia Halima Suleiman, led an assessment team to communities affected by the flooding to determine the extent and impact of the floodwaters.

NEMA reported that some communities experienced flash floods, which submerged roads and temporarily trapped residents in their homes.

The flooding also disrupted movement, forcing residents to navigate affected areas with caution.

The agency said Hajia Suleiman visited the family of the late Yakubu to sympathise with them over the loss and offer support.

NEMA added that it, alongside KADSEMA and other emergency responders, would continue to monitor the situation and assess the needs of affected communities to facilitate an appropriate response.
