Hajiya Naja’atu Mohammed, a former campaign director for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has claimed that outside forces now rule Nigeria instead of the country’s elected government.
In an interview with Arewa Source, she stated that she was deeply concerned about what she called the increasing foreign interference in the nation’s affairs.
According to Naja’atu, recent events indicate that Nigeria is progressively losing control over its domestic affairs.
She claims that the nation is reverting to a “colonial-style” scenario in which foreigners, not national leaders, are influencing important choices.
“It is only God that will continue to protect Nigeria and Nigerians. I have said this before and I will say it again, they have brought back the colonisation era that Nigeria and its people will not have freedom anymore.”
She emphasised that only divine intervention can save the country and its citizens, saying that Nigerians are currently living in uncertainty.
The lawmaker from Kano compared Nigeria’s circumstances to those of nations like Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic.
She pointed out that these nations vehemently opposed foreign meddling, but Nigeria, in her opinion, still depends on it because of what she called ineffective leadership.
“Niger Republic, Mali and Burkina Faso all resisted and chased foreign intervention in their country, saying they are tired of foreign influence and will not allow them to be decolonised. But because of how bad Nigeria and its leaders have become they are still calling for foreign intervention.”
Naja’atu contended that Nigeria has never welcomed foreign military intervention to this degree, citing the nation’s political history since gaining independence in 1960.
She maintained that President Tinubu’s actions are unprecedented and indicate a concerning change.
“Since Nigeria got its Independence in 1960, it has never accepted military intervention from a foreign country to intervene in an insurrection, but this could only happen in the regime of President Bola Tinubu.”
In one of her most forceful remarks, she asserted that President Tinubu is no longer in complete command of the nation, claiming that U.S.
President Donald Trump and other Western powers now have effective leadership. She accused foreign interests of influencing national government and economic decisions, warning that Nigeria has, in her words, been “recolonized.”
“The only thing left for Nigeria now to say is ‘Inna Li Lahi Wa Inna Illaahi Rajiun’, i.e. things have gone from bad to worse. Now Nigerians have lost their country to foreign countries. It is not Tinubu that is ruling Nigeria anymore, it is Donald Trump.”
“We have now been recolonised by Western Powers, Tinubu is no longer the President, Donald Trump is the new President of Nigeria.”
Additionally, Naja’atu accused foreign actors of demanding new tax laws and policies, linking foreign engagement to Nigeria’s economic trajectory.
She said that foreign powers were treating Nigeria like a commercial endeavour.
“Even our taxes will now be going to France, our country is now a business, the new tax law is full of foreign influence and we will not accept this.”
Her remarks follow days after the United States, working with Nigerian authorities, conducted airstrikes on insurgent camps in Sokoto State that were connected to the Islamic State.
As part of continued counterterrorism collaboration between the two nations, President Tinubu and U.S. President Donald Trump approved the operation, which targeted extremist combatants.
According to defence authorities, Nigerian intelligence supported the employment of precision-guided munitions in the strikes.
Nigeria’s foreign ministry insisted that only militants, not civilians, were the target of the operation.
As missiles struck suspected terrorist targets, residents in several districts of Sokoto reported fear and traumatised communities after the explosions. There haven’t been any verified reports of civilian casualties, though.
