“They wanted to take over my properties” – Man cries out over alleged wrongful arrest, police detention in Ekiti

A Nigerian man has cried out online after describing an alleged interaction with police officials in Ekiti State, saying he was illegally arrested and jailed.

According to him, he was travelling when he was abruptly stopped, arrested for no apparent cause, and taken to a police station despite recording the entire thing.

“They asked me, do I think Nigeria is America? They said they will show me the real Nigeria, threatened to seize my car and take all my properties. They even collected my phone and the little cash I had,” he said.

He further claimed that he was later hauled to court without his statement being properly recorded, where he was accused of assaulting an officer and possessing a stolen vehicle.

The individual argued that all of his car paperwork were legitimate, that he had recently renewed them, and that the claims were entirely incorrect.

“They said I assaulted a police officer and that my car was stolen. Meanwhile, my camera glasses recorded everything. I was remanded in prison over what I know is a false case,” he added.

He added that after some time in jail, he was brought back before the court to seek bail.

However, in an unexpected turn of events, the judge dismissed the case as frivolous, resulting in his freedom.

The incident has since sparked reactions online. One user wrote, “This is scary 😳 Nigeria police need serious reform,” while another added, “This could happen to anybody. Thank God he came out.”
