A man has gone viral after sharing an emotional account of how his family reacted when his brother, who lives in United States, stopped sending money home for just three months.
According to a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), he explained that it was the first time in eight years that his brother had paused financial support to the family.
He said relatives quickly began accusing his brother of abandoning the family and forgetting his roots after relocating abroad, despite years of consistent assistance.
The story sparked widespread reactions online, with many social media users discussing the pressure often placed on Nigerians living overseas to constantly provide financial support for extended family members.
Others sympathised with the brother, arguing that people abroad also face personal struggles and responsibilities that relatives back home may not fully understand.
“This boy is forming in America. He has forgotten us. His wife in Nigeria just had a baby and he did not even come for the naming ceremony. People were already talking about that too,” he said.
“Turned out my brother had been saving for six months for a flight home. Unexpectedly, his landlord increased the rent, so he had to choose. My aunt said, ‘But couldn’t he have borrowed? Is he not in America?’”
The narrator later discovered that while the rest of the family members were busy judging his brother, their younger sister had quietly been supporting him emotionally and financially behind the scenes.
“Yes. I send him something small every month. Just around $20, though. I know it’s nothing. I just didn’t want him to feel alone,” he added.
