They Called Me A Gold Digger Because Of My Wife’s Age — RMD Opens Up

Nollywood legend Richard Mofe-Damijo, popularly known as RMD, has finally addressed the heavy labels people threw at him early in his marriage. Speaking in a heartfelt interview with Chude Jideonwo, the veteran actor revealed that many Nigerians did not understand his love story at the time.

RMD shared that he met his wife, who is three years older than him, during his early days in Lagos. As a young man from Warri, he only wanted to act and perhaps find a teaching job to sustain himself. However, their connection grew after attending several events together at the then-famous Night Shift.

The actor expressed a bit of sadness regarding how people judged him before the era of social media. Because his wife was older and more established, critics in “soft sell” magazines labeled him a “gold digger.”

“I am a Warri boy… I met a beautiful woman three years older than me and we got married. Words like gold digger have been used for me,” RMD stated.

Despite the hurtful names, RMD’s story remains one of hope, showing that true love in the limelight can survive despite what people say in the streets of Lagos or on the pages of magazines.
