The Electoral Act, 2022 (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill 2026 was approved by the Nigerian Senate today, February 17, 2026.

When the upper chamber reconvened, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (ADC/Abia South) demanded a division on Clause 60, which led to a boisterous session prior to the approval.

Rising under Order 72(1), Abaribe requested a division on Clause 60(3), particularly with regard to the clause that states that Form EC8A should not be used as the only basis if electronic transmission of results fails.

He also called for the removal of the proviso that permits manual transmission of results in the event of network failure.

Akpabio ordered senators who backed the caveat to stand throughout the division. Then he called on those who were against the caveat to stand up.

The condition that the form EC8A should be used as a backup method for results transfer in the event that electronic transmission fails was opposed by fifteen opposition senators.

After the votes were tallied, the Senate President declared that 55 senators supported the proviso and 15 senators opposed it.
