The Guardian learned this during a visit to Duchess International Hospital in Lagos, where the former world champion is recovering from injuries sustained in the crash.
The driver has already submitted his statement, and he could face charges for careless driving after visiting the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) at the Sagamu junction, where the truck is packed.
“Anthony Joshua’s driver has been discharged from the hospital and is currently giving his statement,” the Nigerian Police Force spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, told The Guardian.
Also, according to an FRSC officer, the truck driver fled the site immediately following the Joshua collision and has been proclaimed wanted.
According to the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) in Ogun State, preliminary investigations found that the accident was caused by a ruptured tyre.
TRACE reported that the front tyre on the passenger side of the SUV Joshua was in ruptured, resulting in a loss of control before colliding with a stationary truck.
According to an AFP report, TRACE spokeswoman Babatunde Akinbiyi told reporters: “Based on the preliminary investigation, there was definitely overspeeding on the part of Anthony Joshua’s SUV.” During this time, the passenger-side front tyre blew out.
This resulted in a loss of control, causing the vehicle to swerve and collide with the stationary truck. “There was excessive speed.” Joshua, 36, was evacuated to Duchess International Hospital in Lagos and is in stable condition, but two of his team members, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, were killed on the site.
