Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi’s father dies in a road accident

The family of Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi is in profound sadness following the loss of his father, Sunday Ndidi.

Sunday Ndidi reportedly died on Tuesday as a result of a catastrophic traffic accident in Delta State, Nigeria.

According to reports, the late Ndidi was engaged in a terrible vehicle accident near the Umunede area of Delta State. He was transported to a hospital in Agbor.

Despite medical personnel’s attempts, he later died from injuries incurred in the incident, leaving his family and loved ones devastated.

Wilfred Ndidi’s club, Besiktas, confirmed the devastating news in a statement issued on Tuesday.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of our footballer Wilfred Ndidi’s esteemed father, Sunday Ndidi, in a fatal traffic accident,

“May Allah grant mercy to the deceased; we extend our condolences to our footballer Wilfred Ndidi, his family, and loved ones.”

Sunday Ndidi, a retired military officer, played an important influence in developing his son’s football career. Wilfred Ndidi has repeatedly discussed his father’s influence on his career.

The Super Eagles captain recently celebrated that friendship after Nigeria’s stunning 3-2 win against Tunisia in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

After scoring in the match, Ndidi mimicked Nwankwo Kanu’s legendary celebration from the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, which piqued spectators’ interest.

“It was for Papilo, the legend Kanu Nwankwo. Growing up, my dad was a huge fan of Kanu,” Ndidi said after the game.

“In our house, Kanu was the ultimate hero.”

The 29-year-old midfielder revealed that the celebration was a personal tribute to his father, who encouraged him to play football.

“My dad always talked about his grace, his goals, and how he represented Nigeria,” Ndidi added.

“I told myself before the game that if I scored, I had to do it for my dad.”

Ndidi described the party as an expression of gratitude for his father’s mentorship and sacrifices throughout his life and career.

“He’s the one who pushed me into football and always told me stories of the greats,” he said.

“Celebrating like Kanu in a Super Eagles jersey is my way of saying thank you. It’s a very proud moment for my family.”
