South Africa has officially launched its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, introducing a digital process aimed at making international travel easier while strengthening border security.
President Cyril Ramaphosa launched the system on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, describing the initiative as a major step towards modernising how international visitors enter the country.
“The Electronic Travel Authorisation system will make travel to South Africa easier, faster and more predictable. It will encourage tourism. It will support trade. It will attract investment,” Ramaphosa said.
The digital platform allows eligible travellers to submit their personal information and complete the application process online before travelling.
South African authorities can then conduct pre-screening ahead of arrival, while biometric and facial-recognition technology may be used at the border to verify travellers.
Four Countries Currently Covered
South Africa’s ETA system currently covers travellers from four countries:

- 🇮🇳 India
- 🇮🇩 Indonesia
- 🇲🇽 Mexico
The initiative is expected to streamline the entry process for eligible travellers while giving South African authorities greater capacity to conduct security checks before visitors arrive in the country.
