“Some of You Are Suffering in the Name of Marriage” — Tonia Umerah Blasts Married Women Criticising Singles Living Comfortably

Nigerian woman Tonia Umerah has criticised married women who advise single ladies against becoming financially comfortable, arguing that such advice unfairly suggests that financial independence could reduce their chances of finding husbands.

Tonia’s reaction followed alleged criticism from married men and women after she installed a solar inverter system in her home to address persistent electricity outages.

In a video shared on Saturday, November 1, she questioned why unmarried women were being criticised for using their hard-earned money to improve their living conditions.

The Nigerian lady argued that single women should be encouraged to celebrate their achievements, including buying cars, building houses and installing alternative power systems, rather than being discouraged from enjoying the results of their hard work.

She said:

“The easiest way for you to know you don’t have sense as a married woman is when you see a single lady do something for herself.”

Tonia also faulted the notion that single women should avoid enjoying certain comforts because they are yet to get married.

Questioning why unmarried women should deny themselves a better quality of life while waiting for potential partners, she expressed frustration with those promoting such advice.

“Madam, with all due respect, shut up. Some of you don’t have sense at all. Shut up,” she stated.

She further claimed that some women who discourage single ladies from enjoying financial independence were themselves unhappy in their marriages.

According to Tonia, it was unfair for married women to suggest that unmarried women should limit their achievements or comfort in anticipation of marriage.

“Some of you are suffering in the name of marriage,” she said.

Tonia maintained that a woman’s financial achievements should not be viewed as a threat to her chances of getting married.

She urged married women to congratulate single ladies for their accomplishments instead of suggesting that their independence could make it difficult for them to attract suitors.

“Shut up. Tell people congratulations and move on,” she added.

Her comments have sparked discussions about financial independence, marriage expectations and the pressure some unmarried women face over their lifestyle choices.
