“Some friends have been silent during my trial. I’d reconsider certain relationships”- El-Rufai

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai has disclosed that his recent experience has made him reconsider some of his relationships, particularly after some friends he previously supported appeared to distance themselves from him.

The former minister made the disclosure in a statement shared on his X account.

El-Rufai is currently facing allegations relating to money laundering and the conversion of public property.

He has reportedly remained in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) since February 19, following his release by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Reflecting on his situation, the former governor said the reactions of some people close to him during his recent difficulties had taught him important lessons about relationships and life.

He noted that some individuals had expressed concern over the apparent silence of certain colleagues, friends and family members whom he had previously supported publicly or maintained close associations with.

El-Rufai wrote:

“Some have expressed concern at the apparent silence, in my present circumstances, of some of my colleagues, friends and family members whom I have publicly stood by or associated closely with in the past.

What I learn in difficult times like the past few months may lead me, quietly and without regret, to reconsider the nature of certain relationships and what those that look up to me expect of them.”

He, however, clarified that any decision to reassess such relationships should not be interpreted as an attempt to blame or condemn those involved.

Rather, he said the experience has given him an opportunity to gain a clearer understanding of people and life.
