Following Matias Almeyda’s resignation, Sevilla have agreed to have Luis Garcia Plaza take over as head coach.
Almeyda, the former manager of Nigeria’s Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke, was fired on Monday following a 2-0 home loss to Valencia, leaving the club just three points above the relegation zone.
Quick managerial appointment
Sevilla moved fast to find a replacement, and discussions for Garcia Plaza ended shortly after they began. The former Deportivo Alaves coach is likely to take over following the international break.
The club chose experience over other options in order to avoid relegation, preferring a manager who is accustomed with La Liga challenges.
Instability and High stakes
Garcia Plaza becomes Sevilla’s seventh manager since Julen Lopetegui’s departure in 2022.
Defensive issues have been a key worry this season, with Sevilla surrendering 49 goals in 29 league games, the division’s worst record.
Uncertainty exists both on and off the pitch. A buyout attempt including Sergio Ramos is presently underway, although the club’s top-flight position may impact the outcome.
With a vital match against Real Oviedo coming up after the break, Sevilla’s last stretch of the season will most likely define both their sporting and financial future.
