The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has declared that he will step away from the 2027 presidential race if actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo presents credible evidence proving he is unfit to hold public office.

Obi recently filed a defamation lawsuit against Okonkwo, who was appointed spokesperson for the presidential campaign of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

The former Anambra State governor challenged Okonkwo to publicly disclose any information he claims to have that could damage his reputation.

Speaking during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Obi explained that the legal action was not intended to suppress free speech but rather to compel Okonkwo to back up his repeated allegations with evidence.

He stressed that Nigerians have the right to know the true character and background of anyone seeking elective office before casting their votes.

“I want Kenneth Okonkwo to bring out all the ‘hidden things’ that he has on me. If I am not qualified after his revelation, then I’ll stop running for the election,” Obi said.

Obi stated that Okonkwo has repeatedly claimed to possess sensitive information about him from the period he served as his spokesperson.

Addressing criticism that the lawsuit was an attempt to intimidate his former ally, Obi maintained that the case was simply aimed at ensuring Okonkwo substantiates the allegations he has publicly made.

“Kenneth Okonkwo said, as my spokesperson, he had so many hidden things that if he’s provoked or sued, he will bring them out. And that’s the only thing I’m suing him for—to bring those things out,” he added.
