Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned the tear-gassing of Nigerians peacefully demanding free, fair, and credible elections.
Obi expressed concern in a Facebook post on Tuesday about what he saw as the suppression of citizens exercising their democratic rights. He expressed concern that people who had previously positioned themselves as defenders of democracy are now undermining it.
He believes that such actions have the potential to erode public trust and undermine the foundations of good governance.
Obi urged Nigerians to be vigilant and united in protecting the country’s democratic process. He reiterated his call for greater transparency in elections, particularly the requirement for real-time electronic transmission of results directly from polling stations to prevent manipulation and restore trust in the process.
He ended by encouraging citizens to remain hopeful and committed to building a nation founded on justice, accountability, and credible elections, reaffirming his belief that “a New Nigeria is Possible.””
