Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticized President Bola Tinubu over plans for the Presidential Villa, Aso Rock, to disconnect from Nigeria’s national grid and rely fully on solar power.
Obi quoted Tinubu’s campaign promise: “If I do not provide steady electricity in four years, do not vote for me for 2nd Tenure.”
He said more than 32 months into the administration, Nigerians are still facing grid failures and unreliable electricity.
He described the move as “deeply worrisome,” questioning why the seat of power would abandon the national grid instead of fixing it.
Obi asked: “If those in authority disconnect themselves from the system, who then will connect the ordinary Nigerian to reliable power?”
He added that leaders cannot “feast while Nigerians fast,” criticizing the decision to secure uninterrupted power for Aso Rock while millions of Nigerians remain in darkness.
Budget records show ₦10 billion was allocated for solar power at the Presidential Villa in 2025, with additional funding proposed for 2026.
The Presidency has not responded to Obi’s remarks.
