Oluwole Seun, a final-year student in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has allegedly d!ed by su!c!de.
The reason behind the alleged action remains unknown, as close friends reportedly said they noticed no unusual behaviour before the incident.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.
According to the statement, the university management received an emergency report at about 1:30 pm on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.
The incident reportedly occurred at an off-campus apartment in the Damico area of Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife.
Olarewaju said that after receiving the report, OAU’s Quick Response and Security (QRS) Team was deployed to the location alongside officers from the Moore ‘A’ Division of the Nigeria Police Force.
He said the student was taken to the University Health Centre, where a medical doctor pronounced him d3ad on arrival.
OAU management expressed deep concern over the incident, stating that items and information recovered from the scene had been handed over to the police, who have commenced a full investigation into the d3ath. Student Affairs authorities have also been informed to provide welfare support to affected students.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, expressed his condolences to the deceased’s family, friends and classmates.
Professor Bamire urged students experiencing emotional distress, academic pressure or personal difficulties to make use of the official support structures available on campus.
“No student should feel that he or she has to confront overwhelming difficulties alone,” he said.
The university administration also urged members of the community to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information while the police investigation continues.
