“Nobody said anything directly to me” — Man shares how neighbours reacted after woman called him customer

A Nigerian man has shared how his neighbours allegedly began to view him with suspicion after a local drinks seller publicly recognised him as a customer during a compound meeting.

He explained that he had once stopped at the woman’s shop to buy beer. After she said she did not have his preferred Heineken, he settled for another brand but advised her to stock his favourite drink so he could keep patronising her.

The next day, she hailed him as he was passing by her shop.

The man said the woman shouted, “Customer, I get Heineken o!” prompting him to stop and buy the drink.

The man said the gossip began during a compound meeting called to discuss an increase in security and waste disposal fees.

As the meeting was about to end, the same woman mistakenly strayed into the compound. Spotting him, she reportedly shouted, “Customer, na here you dey live?”

He went over to ask what she wanted and found out that she had lost her way. After pointing her in the right direction, he went back to the meeting.

But he said the atmosphere changed at once, as neighbours began whispering and casting suspicious glances at him.

He explained that he later took to their WhatsApp group to explain what had happened, but his neighbours allegedly said he was only defending himself because he had a guilty conscience.

Reflecting on the experience, the man questioned why patronising a businesswoman should turn into suspicion and gossip.

He argued that people often judge others without confirming the facts, twisting everyday encounters into stories that may not be true.

His story highlights how fast misunderstandings can spread in a neighbourhood, especially when people rush to conclusions without knowing the full picture.
