According to a report by Daily Post on Friday, July 10, 2026, Uchechi Kanu, the wife of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has dismissed widespread reports alleging that she has filed for divorce from her husband.

The reports, which circulated on social media and several online platforms, claimed that Uchechi had initiated divorce proceedings while Kanu is serving a life imprisonment sentence. However, she appeared to ridicule the claims, suggesting they were entirely false.

Reacting through her verified X (formerly Twitter) account, Uchechi expressed surprise at the reports and used humour to reject the allegation.

“Good conscious evening, my blessed Biafrans. I have just learned that I filed for Divorce while my husband is in prison,” she wrote, accompanied by a laughing emoji, indicating that she was mocking the reports rather than confirming them.

Her brief response has since generated reactions among supporters of the IPOB leader and other social media users, with many interpreting the post as a direct denial of the divorce rumours.

The reports had alleged that Uchechi decided to end the marriage after years of alleged marital challenges, including claims of infidelity, financial neglect, and interference from Kanu’s family members. According to the unverified reports, these issues had allegedly strained the relationship to the point where reconciliation was no longer possible.

The claims further alleged that Uchechi, who reportedly married Kanu in 2009, had endured years of emotional distress due to his alleged involvement in multiple extramarital relationships. They also suggested that the marriage had suffered significantly during the years preceding his legal troubles.

One of the reports claimed that before his arrest in 2015, Kanu allegedly had a relationship with a woman identified as Chioma Amaryllis Ahaghotu, whom he reportedly met in 2014. According to the claims, she believed he was unmarried at the time and allegedly provided him with financial support before ending the relationship after discovering what the reports described as deception and exploitation.

However, none of these allegations have been independently verified, and Uchechi’s public reaction appears to reject the reports without directly addressing the specific claims contained in them.

Kanu remains one of Nigeria’s most controversial separatist figures due to his campaign for the restoration of the defunct Republic of Biafra. His legal battles have attracted widespread attention both within Nigeria and internationally.

He is currently serving a life imprisonment sentence at the Sokoto Custodial Centre following his conviction on terrorism-related charges linked to his separatist activities.
