A Nigerian woman has shared how she returned to Nigeria after her husband threatened to divorce her when she expressed her desire to settle abroad following the completion of her studies.
According to the woman, she travelled overseas to further her education and developed a strong preference for living there because of the security, effective systems and quality of life she experienced.
After completing her studies, she reportedly informed her husband that she wanted to remain in the country, with plans for him and their children to join her eventually.
However, her husband allegedly disagreed with the idea, insisting that he had no intention of leaving Nigeria.
The woman said she tried to convince him by raising concerns about insecurity, rising inflation and other challenges she believed made living abroad a better option for the family.
Unfortunately, her efforts reportedly did not change his position.
According to her account, her husband gave her a blunt ultimatum, telling her to get a lawyer to file for divorce if she wanted to remain abroad, as he was unwilling to maintain a long-distance marriage.
Faced with the possibility of losing her marriage, the woman said she eventually abandoned her plans to settle overseas and returned to Nigeria.
Recounting her decision humorously, she said, “I carried my two left legs and came back.”
Her story has highlighted a difficult dilemma that some couples may face when their long-term plans, career opportunities and preferred places of residence do not align.
While some couples may be willing to explore relocation or long-distance arrangements, others may consider living in the same country a non-negotiable part of their marriage.
What do you think? Should she have stayed abroad and pursued her dreams, or was returning to Nigeria the right decision to preserve her marriage?
