Nigerian Lady whose mother was abandoned after father’s death wins Mastercard scholarship to UK, overcomes tough struggle

Young woman from Nigeria named Solace Ojotule overcame adversity by winning a Mastercard Scholarship to study in the UK. Solace Ojotule lost her father and had her mother abandoned by her family.

According to Solace Ojutule, who published her experience on Linkedin, her father passed away when she was just 4 years old, and the paternal family promptly stole all of his possessions because her mother had not given birth to a male child.

According to Ojotule’s narration, her mother bared 5 children including herself and all of them are females. “The girls were abandoned with their mother after all properties have been seized by paternal relations. Then the real struggle began for us as kids and for our mother who was now both the father and mother. All hopes went down the drain and it looked like there was no future for me. Life ended before it began in the real sense,” she wrote.

Her mother struggled to pay for their tuition throughout her early years of school. After completing her basic schooling, she claimed that financial constraints prevented her from entering high school, so she would hawk while her friends were in class.

According to Ojotule, it was a blessing that her state’s government provided free junior high school education. She registered for high school and finished it.

At the Kogi State University in North-Central Nigeria, she pursued her education by majoring in theater arts. Throughout her time there, she claimed, she would return to campus to hawk in order to raise money for the future tuition price.

After obtaining multiple rejections from scholarships after receiving a bachelor’s degree in theatrical arts, Solace Ojotule finally received a scholarship from the Mastercard Scholarship to attend the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom.
