The Nigerian Army has commenced an investigation into reports circulating online concerning an allegation of $3xu@l abu$e involving a serving officer, Captain Etim Essien, who is currently serving at Headquarters 3 Division, Jos.

Essien has been accused of allegedly $3xu@lly abu$ing a 13-year-old girl who is deaf and non-speaking, impr3gnating her and fathering a child with her while she was reportedly living under the care of his family in Taraba State.

According to a report by SaharaReporters, the alleged victim is the younger step-sister of Essien’s wife, Blessing Essien.

Army launches investigation

Reacting to the report, the Nigerian Army, in a statement released on Saturday, September 12, said it takes allegations of $3xu@l abu$e seriously, particularly those involving minors and other vulnerable persons.

The Army said appropriate steps had been initiated to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the reported incident.

The military, however, cautioned against reaching conclusions on the culpability of any individual while the investigation is ongoing.

It stated that because the allegation remains under investigation, it would be inappropriate to make definitive comments on the matter or the responsibility of any individual at this stage.

Army to cooperate with civil authorities

The Nigerian Army also said it was aware that relevant civil authorities were investigating the matter.

The military assured that it would cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities to ensure that the allegation is thoroughly and transparently investigated in accordance with existing laws and regulations.

The allegations against Captain Essien have not been established in court, while investigations by the relevant authorities are ongoing.
