Nigeria Reign Supreme at CAF 2023 Awards

Nigerian football took the centre stage at the 2023 CAF Awards in Marrakech, Morocco as the giant of Africa dominated the scene, winning four of the awards.

Super Eagles and Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen, ended Nigeria’s 24-year wait for the African Player of the Year Award beating Egyptian Mo Salah and Moroccan Achraf Hakimi to the award

Nwankwo Kanu last won the award for the country in 1999.

While handing the award to Osimhen, CAF President Patrice Motsepe described Nigeria as the most beautiful country.

To make the night a memorable one for the country, Asisat Oshoala won her record sixth award with Chiamaka Nnadozie winning the women’s goalkeeper award, even as the Super Falcons following their exploits at the last Women’s World Cup won the women’s team of the year award.

While receiving the award, Osimhen paid glowing tributes to Coach Emmanuel Amuneke on the premise that if not for him, he won’t be where he is today. He also thanked his teammates in both the Super Eagles and Napoli. He also eulogised Didier Drogba, whom he described as his role model.

The prize is a recognition of Osimhen’s exploits for his Italian side, Napoli and the Super Eagles where he is a key member. Nigerian forward’s league-leading 26 goals for Napoli last season lifted the club to its first Serie A title in 33 years. His contribution broke George Weah’s record as the highest-scoring player from the continent in the Italian top flight.

Oshoala called for unity in African football, noting that this is the panacea that African football needs to win the World Cup. She pleaded with African football leaders to unite, saying that before the next edition of the Women’s World Cup, “we can do better and can win it.”

Chiamaka Nnadozie, who shone brightly at the FIFA World Cup finals as the Super Falcons reached the Round of 16, was the undoubted winner of the honour of Goalkeeper of the Year (Women).

The Paris FC of France safe hands made a moving speech: “To all the young girls growing up in Africa, dreaming of becoming a footballer one day, believe me dreams do come true. My dad didn’t want me to play football but I’m sure he’s gonna see this and be happy. So, keep dreaming, keep working and I believe that one day you’ll get to this stage.”
