According to report by The Nation on Friday, May 29, 2026, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has acknowledged that it encountered some difficulties during the conduct of its nationwide primaries for presidential, governorship, National Assembly, and State Assembly positions.
However, the party also described the exercise as one marked by strong participation and an encouraging turnout across the country.
This was contained in a statement issued in Abuja by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director.
He explained that the primaries, which began on Thursday and concluded on Friday, drew a large number of party members and supporters from different states.
Aspirants competed through both direct voting and affirmation processes as the party prepared for the 2027 general elections.
Director noted that despite logistical constraints experienced in some areas particularly those linked to the Eid-el-Kabir holiday period and transportation challenges, the exercise was largely peaceful, well-organised, and orderly.
He further stated that officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alongside security agencies such as the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS), were present in several locations to monitor proceedings.
Their involvement, he said, helped ensure compliance with electoral guidelines and maintained order throughout the process.
Reports from across the federation indicated that the voting and affirmation exercises were generally transparent and efficiently conducted.
Party stakeholders also commended both aspirants and supporters for their discipline and peaceful conduct during the primaries.
Some members of the party praised the NDC leadership for introducing a system that allowed aspirants to participate in the primaries before purchasing nomination forms.
According to them, this approach was a departure from the usual political practice and was aimed at strengthening internal democracy and widening participation.
Director added that under the arrangement, only successful aspirants would proceed to purchase nomination forms.
He also noted that many polling centres witnessed a lively and festive atmosphere, with supporters expressing optimism about the party’s future.
The National Working Committee (NWC) is expected to conclude the collation of results from all states before making official announcements at the party’s national secretariat.
Observers, he said, believe the high turnout reflects growing public interest in the NDC ahead of future elections and signals increased momentum within the party.
