“My mother refused to do omugwo for me because my husband wasn’t rich, now she wants to come back” — Woman shares experience

A woman has revealed that because her husband was not wealthy, her mother allegedly declined to come for her omugwo during her first pregnancy.

She claimed that even though the one-bedroom apartment she was living in at the time had basic amenities like air conditioning, her mother claimed that she would have preferred to stay with her sister, whose husband was wealthier and could provide a more comfortable setting.

Both sisters were pregnant around the same period, but her mother chose to stay with the other daughter. She added that when she eventually gave birth, her mother barely acknowledged it, leaving her hurt. Her sister-in-law later stepped in to handle the omugwo.

She explained that things became tougher shortly after as her husband lost his job and spent over a year learning a new business, sending whatever support he could while she managed a small business with occasional help from her sister. Throughout that period, she said her mother remained distant and never checked on them, having earlier opposed the marriage.

According to her, their situation later improved, as her husband became stable and began getting contracts.

Now pregnant again, she said her mother has reached out after years, asking to come for omugwo. However, she declined, saying she would rely on her sister-in-law instead.
