A Nigerian woman has described how an expensive airtime recharge error at her 100 level nearly drove her to commit suicide before an unforeseen sequence of events enabled her to make a financial recovery.
The woman, who went by @opes_aura on X, talked about the event and how it ultimately motivated her to begin selling data and airtime.
She recalled the incident, saying that she accidentally recharged ₦100,000 instead of ₦1,000 while she was at her 100 level.
“The first time I tried to end it all was in my 100L. I mistakenly recharged #100k instead of #1k. My eyes cleared immediately and because I was in class, one coursemate told me to go to MTN office that they could reverse it,” she wrote.
She mentioned something unexpected happened while she was travelling to the MTN office.
“On my way there, my mum randomly called to tell me where she dropped the house key (mind you, I didn’t even call her,” she recalled.
When she got to the MTN office, she said she was informed that the transaction could not be reversed because a call had already been made from her SIM.
“I got to MTN, they checked my SIM and said I had already made a call, so they couldn’t reverse it. Omo, I went home depressed,” she wrote.
But the event made her want to find another means to get the money back.
She claimed that the next day she started selling data and airtime to other students and internet users.
The experience also taught her to be more careful when entering figures during transactions.
“After that incident, I started putting on my glasses to count the ZEROs properly before putting my bank PIN,” she wrote.
