Moment multi-story building under construction collapses in Kenya’s Nairobi

A 12-storey building under construction collapsed in Nairobi, Kenya, on Friday, October 23, prompting an emergency rescue operation amid fears that several people were trapped under the rubble.

The building came down along 9th Street in the Eastleigh area at about 1:40 p.m. local time, sending concrete slabs crashing down and forcing pedestrians to run for safety.

Emergency responders, police officers and Kenya Red Cross personnel arrived at the scene to support search-and-rescue efforts, while excavators were brought in to clear the debris.

Kenya’s Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, later confirmed that one person had been rescued, while the search for others who may be trapped under the rubble continued.

The cause of the collapse had not been determined at the time of reporting.
