A Scotland-based Nigerian man has appealed for advice online after his wife allegedly threatened to withdraw his dependent sponsorship following a disagreement over a family WhatsApp group.
In a video shared on X, formerly Twitter, the man explained that his wife, who is the main applicant on their immigration arrangement, threatened to remove him as her dependent because he refused to leave a WhatsApp group created for his mother and siblings.
According to him, the group was established specifically for members of his immediate family to discuss personal and family matters. However, his wife reportedly insisted that she should be included because they were married and ought to operate as one family.
The man said he acknowledged their marital relationship but maintained that the group was intended exclusively for his mother and siblings.
He recounted his wife’s reaction:
“I’m like, how? She said, are we not one? I said yes, we are one, but this one is just my own inside family.”
Man expresses concern over possible sponsorship withdrawal
The man, who described their marriage as peaceful before the disagreement, maintained that the issue began because he refused to leave the family group or add his wife to it.
He expressed fear about the possible consequences of losing his dependent status, admitting that he was uncertain how he would rebuild his life if his wife went ahead with her threat.
Appealing to social media users for guidance, he said:
“I don’t know what to do. Should I remove myself from the WhatsApp group or add her to it? I don’t even know.”
His account has generated conversations about privacy, boundaries between spouses and extended families, and the vulnerability of dependent partners in immigration arrangements.
However, the full circumstances surrounding the disagreement and the wife’s account have not been made public.
