A Nigerian man has attracted widespread attention on social media after rewarding a stranger with ₦150,000 for returning ₦1.8 million mistakenly transferred into his OPay account.
The incident was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by a user identified as @bod_republic, who narrated how he nearly lost a substantial amount of money following an erroneous bank transfer.
According to him, he immediately contacted the recipient after realising his mistake but initially could not reach the individual because the phone number was unavailable.
After approximately 30 minutes, the recipient’s number became accessible, allowing him to explain the situation and appeal for the money to be returned.
In an attempt to appreciate the recipient’s cooperation, he reportedly offered him ₦100,000 as a reward for returning the funds.
To his surprise, the individual transferred the entire ₦1.8 million back without withholding any portion.
Impressed by the stranger’s honesty, the man subsequently increased his initial offer and sent him ₦150,000 in appreciation.
His account has since generated reactions online, with several users praising the recipient’s integrity and sharing similar experiences involving mistaken transfers.
Reacting to the story, an X user identified as Farm Aggregate questioned the assumption that people who receive mistaken transfers are necessarily financially disadvantaged.
Another user, Echan, recalled receiving an accidental transfer of ₦204,000, explaining that they returned the money and personally contacted the sender to confirm its successful delivery.
Similarly, Annoy commended the recipient for returning the entire amount before receiving any reward.
However, Harsha shared a contrasting experience, revealing that a similar mistake involving a PayPal transaction had once happened to them, but the money was never recovered.
The incident has sparked conversations about honesty, financial responsibility and the importance of doing the right thing when receiving money mistakenly sent by another person.
